Who deserves the judgment of God?
Who deserves the judgment of God?
What judgement? (1:32) - the sentence of death/punishment
The wrong answer (vv. 1-5, last time)
To judge others as worthy of God’s judgment…but not yourself.
The question is not how does one compare…but is one guilty of any sin (1:29-31).
The sin of anyone’s life is immeasurable...
No matter how it compares to anyone else.
What’s the right answer? (vv. 6-11)

He alone is the judge of who deserves punishment.
So it is His standard that we are measured by.
Not by comparisons…in fact, just the opposite.

How does He decide what people deserve?
By their works (v. 6)

“Render” - to reward or punish, to give back accordingly
“Works” - what a person does…notice it is plural - so all of their deeds are take into account by God
Paul contrasts....

“Patience” - perseverance or endurance
“Well-doing” - do good - general, vague, undefined
“Seek” - actively desire
“Glory” - praise worthy; “Honor” - valuable; “immortality” - incorruptible life; TRULY
“Eternal life” - what they wanted really, opposite of God’s judgment/punishment; more must be said on this.
This is new in the text, this is like a mention within a much broader context that is not about this.
So, Paul will have to explain this further, especially in light of (Romans 3:10–12)...
10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;
11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

“Self-seeking” - selfish ambition even at the expense of others, contentious.
“Do not obey the truth” - The core reason (1:18) for the result (1:32).
“Unrighteousness” - what they embrace/serve
“Wrath and fury” - from God, punishment, deserved; undefined/unspecified - to be feared

“Tribulation and distress” parallels “wrath and fury.” The one is of God, the other is of mankind.
This is a reminder of why - “does evil.”
Then the emphasis on WHO will be judged in this way.

“Glory and honor and peace” parallels verse 7.
This is still possible (Philippians 2:12–13).
